In recent years, efforts to defend biodiversity have overcome some obstacles that, not long ago, were considered to be practically insurmountable. To achieve this, companies have joined together to pursue a single purpose and jointly develop a variety of projects. However, these efforts have often been supplemented in other ways. Many companies have also implemented their own independent measures, which have helped integrate the concept of sustainability into their decision-making procedures.

In relation to this, Alberto Matellán, Chief Economist at MAPFRE Inversión, recently participated in the third meeting of the Impact Lab, organized by FundsPeople. He emphasizes the commitment that the MAPFRE Group has made in its 2022‑2024 Sustainability Plan to “take part in a variety of initiatives, including NetZero.”

Other projects have also been added to this effort, as a way to strengthen the insurance company’s position in this area. “Thanks to our extensive experience with insuring climate-related risks, we have some very powerful measurement tools,” the expert explains. Specifically, he emphasizes the use of the company’s resources to take carbon footprint measurements “for the portfolio as well as for the underwriting activities.”

Matellán also mentions other methods the Group is applying in order to quantify “the impact that our portfolios of third-party funds, as well as the portfolios based on our own funds, are having on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.” In this case, the focus is on the goals most closely related to the financial sphere.

The range of policies that MAPFRE has been putting in place in relation to sustainability has led various organizations to recognize the company’s efforts. “Based upon the audit it performed, France’s Ministry of Finance was very satisfied with our policies, and we have been awarded its Label ISR,” he explains. He also believes that in the not‑too‑distant future, European regulations will begin to follow the same path as the one established by that Ministry.

Alternative assets are a good way to diversify the portfolio, and MAPFRE knows it. Since 2018, the Group has worked to have greater exposure to this area and explore new investment opportunities: as of last year, €1.35 billion had been committed to this type of asset.

Fixed income is shaping up to be "the star asset" this year, although uncertainty regarding interest rate movements could put some investors off. Juan Nozal, fund manager of MAPFRE AM, explains how these movements impact bond prices and yields.
