For investors, 2022 was not a good year, as many faced losses in the equities market as well as in fixed income, often in the double digits. This also had an impact on the profit figures reported by asset managers. After a period characterized by rising numbers year after year, in 2022 Spanish asset management firms saw their collective profit drop by 15% to €741 million. This is according to 2022 year‑end statistics for collective investment vehicles, which were recently released by the Spanish National Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV) and published this week in an article at the FundsPeople website.

Nevertheless, despite this downturn at the general level, the vast majority of Spanish managers were able to see off the year with an increase in their profit. In fact, this was the case for 93 of the 119 managers that reported their figures to the CNMV, representing 78% of the total. Specifically, MAPFRE AM, the asset management firm from the MAPFRE insurance group, which has almost €40 billion in assets under management, emerged as the profit leader among Spain’s independent managers, posting a figure of over €33 million. When managers from Spanish banking groups are included in the ranking, MAPFRE AM still remains in the top 10.
